Automotive DIY: Check Fluids Constantly

As your vehicle gets older and up there in mileage (I have one over 200,000 still going strong and two over 140,000), I highly recommend checking your fluids constantly.

I drive quite a bit, and I check my automotive fluids every Saturday. Here is what I check:

  • Oil
  • Brake fluid
  • Power steering
  • Transmission fluid
  • Antifreeze
  • Wiper fluid

Most are purely visual inspection, with the exception of oil.

This procedure takes me five minutes on three vehicles, 15 minutes if I need to make additions.

I also check tire pressure weekly and use fuel additives every three weeks or so.
