How to Take Your Kids Fishing (Part IV)

One of the best frugal activities is fishing-- fun and good eats. This is the fourth of a series to get you started. The subject of this post is actually how to fish,-- here are ways to do it:
- Use bait-- live bait (worms and bait fish) almost assures action if the fish are present. Using lures is fun and challenging, but isn't as effective as bait
- Use patience-- sometimes the fish come in the first cast (especially early in the morning), other times after an hour or not at all
- Set the hook with a solid snap of the rod-- when you get a solid bite, be sure to really get the fish on the line
- Keep the line with a fish on it tight and have the drag set properly-- your reel will have a drag adjustment that needs to be set to let out line if the fish pulls. If it is not loose-- the fish could break the line . . .
- Net your fish-- I have lost good ones at my feet violating this one . . . now I net
As I have mentioned-- practice and experience makes better.
Next, I will cover handling the catch.
