How to Take Your Kids Fishing (Part I)

One of the best frugal activities is fishing-- fun and good eats.
This is the first of a series to get you started.  The subject of this post is getting up:

  • Get a license-- Most states require those over age 16 to get an inland fishing license (if you live near the coast, you may not need a saltwater license).  The local bait and tackle store or town hall is your first stop.  In-state licenses are about $20 and out-of-state licenses are usually double
  • Get a copy of your state's angler's guide-- There are some rules and regulations you need to be familiar with.  Further, these guides point you to the places to fish near you
  • Open your eyes to places to fish-- When you are out and about look for rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes, then refer to the state angler's guide
  • Look at maps for places to fish-- Again, check back with the angler's guides
  • Ask friends and the folks at the bait and tackle shop for spots to fish

Next, I will cover gearing up to go fishing.
