Wilderness Survival Skills: Hand Capture Fishing For Survival

Hand capture fishing is scooping, grabbing, or pitching the fish with your "mitts" (Hands). It is an active fishing method that employs sight fishing and using the tools God gave you-- your hands. It involves time, skill, and luck to be successful.

Some fisherman engage in hand fishing for sport and fun where it is legal (Catfish noodling comes to mind), it is actually another viable and valuable survival technique.

Here is what you need:

  • Two hands
  • Good vision
  • Quick reflexes

Here is what to do:

  • Sight fish in swallow spots (Or feel around if "noodling") that have active fish traffic
  • Target and lead the fish (Aim in front or to where the fish will move to)
  • Scoop, grab, or pitch your prey and secure it quickly-- consider several yards back on the backs of the stream, river, or lake

Hand capturing fish is another art form . . . practice makes better. It pays to know and use other methods in addition to hand capture.

The time to learn survival fishing methods is before you need to use them.

Bear in mind some of these techniques are probably illegal in your state-- EXCEPT in true survival situations. It is best to check your local regulations.
