Wilderness Survival Skills: Spear Fishing For Survival

Spear fishing for survival purposes is an active fishing method that employs sight fishing and using a trident spear, bow and arrow, knife on a limb, or a forked limb to impale your prey. I am also adding a speargun to this list. It involves time, skill, and luck to be successful.

Some fisherman engage in spear fishing for sport and fun where it is legal, it is actually another viable and valuable survival technique.

Here is what you need:

  • Trident Spear
  • Bow and arrow (Attach a string to the arrow's tail)
  • Speargun and water-tight goggles
  • Knife on a limb or stick (Knives are tricky because they usually are not barbed-- best to pin them)
  • Improvised limb (Add notches to create barbs)

Here is what to do:

  • Sight fish in swallow spots (Unless actually in the water with goggles and a speargun) that have active fish traffic
  • Target and lead the fish (Aim in front or to where the fish will move to)
  • Impale (or pin) your prey and secure speared fish quickly

Spearing fish is an art form . . . practice makes better. It pays to know and use other methods in addition to spearing.

The time to learn survival fishing methods is before you need to use them.

Bear in mind some of these techniques are probably illegal in your state-- EXCEPT in true survival situations. It is best to check your local regulations.
