Wilderness Survival Skills: Trot Line Fishing For Survival

Trot line fishing is fishing with a simple line with multiple hooks-- in a passive, "set it and forget it" manner.
It is simply fishing by hand with a line and traditional tackle or improvised tackle. It is simple, relatively easy. and inexpensive.

Some fisherman engage in trot line fishing for sport and fun (particularly for catfish) where it is legal, it is actually another viable and valuable survival technique.

Here is what you need:

  • A decent length of line (typically 12-100 feet)
  • A series of hooks with bait (typically 10-25 per line)
  • Weights to anchor the line
  • Floats (Old milk jug or laundry detergent containers)

Here is what to do:

  • Place or tie off the line in a spot that has active fish traffic
  • Leave in place if bait
  • Check line every few hours

The thing about trot lining is it "stacks the proverbial deck" and allows you to do other more critical survival activities-- much like snaring for small game in a survival situation.

The time to learn survival fishing methods is before you need to use them.

Bear in mind some of these techniques are probably illegal in your state-- EXCEPT in true survival situations. It is best to check your local regulations.
