DIY Fishing Gear: How to Make Sand Spikes

If you are a surfcaster, then you know the value of a sand spike . . . they are invaluable, but very expensive for what they really are. I have two that I paid about $12 each for just a few years ago. These days they run about $15 or more. The thing is, they make handling the rods easier and they keep the reel out of the sand (super important concept). I need some more, but refuse to pay $15 for two or three feet of PVC pipe. So I went to Home Depot.

I made two two footers and two three footers for the low, low price of $3.56 plus some tax. Yes, a ten foot by 1.5 inch piece of PVC pipe can be cut down to four or more (depending on your size requirements) sand spikes. Additionally, one of my rods needs a two inch pipe– I made two five footers for that one (time to go back Home Depot). If I add bolts (not required, but recommended), to hold the rod up in the tube, I had to spend another dollar or two (I paid $0.60 a piece for eyelet bolts so I can also hook things on them– or string them together for easier carrying).

So how do you make sand spikes?

  • Get and cut the pipe to the sizes required– I used a hacksaw (I subsequently used a compound mitre saw for more spikes)
  • Cut the bottom of the spike on an angle (about 30 percent) to create a point– again, use a hacksaw and a mitre box to cut the angle
  • Sand the top and bottom to smooth out the cuts– use a file or 100 grit sand paper to start and finish with 300 grit
  • If you want a flared top, heat the top end and insert a glass bottle to shape the taper– I used my heat gun
  • Measure your rod and determine where you need the support bolt– best to have an inch or two of space between the top and your reel connection
  • Drill the necessary hole through both sides
  • Insert and fasten the bolt
