DIY Fishing Gear: How to Make a Fishing Priest or Club

Another DIY Surf Fishing Gear project– How to make a fishing priest or club. Today, I am going with making a fishing priest or club for under $2.00. If you pull in big fish, it is sometimes necessary to put them out of their misery fast. This tool is mainly for your safety, rather then dispatching the fish for other reasons. A trip to Home Depot will get you what you need for this project.

Here’s what you need:

  • A closet rod dowel from the scrap bin $0.51
  • 1-2' of 1/4" rope $0.42
  • Wipe-On varnish $0.50 (I had this on hand)
  • 2-3 Rags
  • Sandpaper 60 and 120 or 150 grit $0.50 (I had this on hand)
  • Drill with countersink and 1/4" bits
  • Torch lighter

My outlay was $0.93, but the total is probably closer to $1.93 because I had some stuff on hand.
Pride and personal satisfaction = priceless. This project took me 10 minutes of actual work and two days on varnish dry times.

Here’s what to do:

  • Cut the dowel to desired length
  • Drill the rope hole about 1" down from one end
  • Countersink the hole on both sides
  • Sand the whole thing with 60 grit– remove all rough edges
  • Sand the thing with 120 or 150 grit for a smooth finish
  • Varnish the club and allow to dry
  • Repeat the last step after lightly sanding with the 120 or 150 grit paper
  • Repeat the last twos steps again until satisfied with the finish
  • Run the rope through the handle hole and cut to size
  • Knot the rope and burn the ends

You are done. You can use marine varnish if you want, but that adds expense.

I have seen these at Sports Authority for $15.

Reintroduce yourself to your tools and some scrap materials, DIY, customize, and save money!
