How to Get a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Divorce

A Do-It-Yourself (DIY) divorce is faster and cheaper than a drawn out divorce that typically takes months or years and only enriches divorce attorneys, but there are some considerations.
A DIY divorce is easier if:
- The divorce is amicable
- There are no kids in the marriage
- There are few assets to divide
- The assets are transferable
- Both parties are employed
DIY divorce steps:
- Complete and file forms at the courthouse (including the financial statements)
- Serve the papers to the other party
- Show up at court on the appointed dates and times
- Follow the courts instructions and the process should be quick
Most of the paperwork and the procedures are available online or at the courthouse in your state. Talk to the court clerks-- they are a big help.
If on the other hand, you have:
- Kids
- A family business or sizable assets
- A non-working spouse
A DIY divorce is a problem. Under these circumstances, you will probably need an attorney and be prepared to pay.
I am not an attorney and this is by no means all inclusive, I hope this gets you started.
