The Art of Keeping a Low Profile

I believe in keeping a low profile. I do it for peace of mind and personal safety (criminals notice the outward signs of prosperity too). Truth be told, there are many other reasons for this– my divorce only accelerated my desire for privacy. I try to keep a low profile from my:
- Ex-wife
- Family
- Friends
- Neighbors
- Coworkers
- Strangers
When you get down to it– why invite:
- Questions
- Criticisms
- Concerns
- Nosey behavior
Personal privacy is hard to come by these days– especially if you are divorced. I think it is best if people don’t know too much about what I have, what I do, and how I live. To me, privacy is part of a quality life.
So how have I moved to keep a low profile and preserve some semblance of privacy?
- I live in a more rural area away from people I know and where I can be on a property that is big enough with trees to block the view of my neighbors.
- Businesses and projects that I have outside of my employment are low key and shielded from view and are usually conducted on-line.
- My job/business is conducted with strangers, not people in my personal life and I don’t discuss business in detail with personal acquaintances.
- I use separate mailing addresses (this cuts down on junk mail), post office boxes, email accounts, phone numbers, and bank accounts for different things.
- My car is a clean, sensible, fuel efficient car with no identifying signs or stickers (I don’t want to get my car keyed because I like the “wrong” team or have the wrong political view).
When I small talk with people I talk about areas of common interest like gardening or fishing, but try to keep the topic on them– I don’t volunteer too much. This also makes me more interesting to people because people love to talk about themselves.
