How to Determine Eye Dominance

If you are going to hunt, determining eye dominance is very important if you expect to hit targets with any accuracy.
I spent the weekend teaching the boys to shoot their airguns they got with their Christmas money. One of the first things I did was determine their eye dominance (The next thing, was safe gun handling).

One of your eyes does your aiming-- the trick is to learn which one so you can shoot arrows and bullets accurately and effectively.

So how do you determine eye dominance?

  • Form a triangle with your two hands
  • Stretch out your arms
  • Peer through the triangle (Aiming at a target) and have a friend look and see which eye is in the triangle (Right or left?)

If you are alone, you can still determine eye dominance in one of two other ways:

  1. Perform the same exercise above with a mirror
  2. Slowly bring your arms and triangle back toward your face keeping the target in sight and eventually your hands will be over your dominant eye

Most people are right eye dominant and can shoot righty. I, despite being a righty, am left eye dominant and must shoot lefty. I can put five consecutive .22 shots in a 1.5 inch diameter circle at 50 yards when shooting lefty (iron sights), but not when shooting righty.

Back to the boys-- by the end of the weekend, the boys were consistently hitting the target . . .
