Self Reliance and Funny Looks

Many times I get funny looks from people when they hear what I can do and what I know about being self reliant. Do I care? No, frankly, I don't give a damn!
In fact, I enjoy the feeling of empowerment and superiority knowing I am capable and they are vulnerable and dependent upon others for everything.
These days people can't fix their autos, homes, or power tools. Sometimes, I just can't believe they are so helpless. Actually, it isn't entirely their fault. The culture and society we live in has been built around ease and convenience.
The problem is that ease and convenience can cost you more than money. It can make you passive, ignorant, and helpless. Let me give you an example . . .
Forget DIY projects for a moment-- I use a GPS (Global Positioning System) device, but I still carry maps in my vehicle and I know how to use them. Why? Because I am a "What if . . . " person. What if GPS fails? I won't be lost-- will you be?
It is the same with calculators. I tell my kids to know how to do it without the technology. I also tell them to anticipate the answer. Why? The technology could be flawed or there could be a human error.
The bottomline: Learn basic skills and you won't be the helpless, hopeless, mind-numbed dummy with the stupid look on your face . . .
