Cooking From Scratch: How to Make Your Own Homemade Iced Tea

Want the best iced tea you ever tasted at a fraction of the cost?
A few summers ago, I picked up an iced tea at Dunkin Donuts-- it was fresh made and my wife and I were convinced it was time to start making it ourselves.

I make two quarts at a time-- here is how to do it . . .

Here's what you need:

  • 2 quarts of water
  • 5-6 tablespoons of sugar
  • 5 tea bags
  • 1 lemon
  • Plenty of ice
  • 1 dash of honey

Here's what to do:

  • Put two quarts of water and 5-6 tablespoons of sugar (more or less if you like) into a saucepan and bring to a boil
  • Carefully pour the hot sugar water into the container, put 5 tea bags into the container, add the dash of honey, cap it and shake twice
  • Let it sit for 5 minutes, then remove the tea bags (mine go to the compost pile)
  • Chill in the refrigerator
  • Serve with ice and sliced lemon in tall glasses

The taste is unbeatable.  The personal satisfaction of making it yourself isn't bad either.

As for saving money-- the kids love iced tea and we were going through plenty of mix.  Mix costs about $5 to make 20 quarts (10 containers) or 50 cents per container.  Making fresh costs $3 for 100 Lipton tea bags which makes 40 quarts (20 containers) or 15 cents per container (adding sugar brings it up to about 20-25 cents).

Enjoy.
