Some Ideas to Help You Develop Self Reliance Skills

Developing self reliance skills is up to you-- you need to commit and put in some time.
I just added to my skill set-- I completed my state's firearm hunting safety course (I had already completed the bowhunting course). I can now get my hunting license. The cost for the course? About 16 hours of my time.

Most states offer certification courses through the department in charge of natural resources. The courses usually include:

  • Firearm Hunting Safety
  • Bowhunting Safety
  • Trapping

These courses are pretty comprehensive and are run by volunteers dedicated to advancing the sports. The courses are "paid for" by license fees and taxes on the hunting equipment and facilities donated by hunting clubs or sports shops.

While my interests are in hunting turkey and deer this year, I learned about many game animals. Additionally, I may take the trapping course for the knowledge, but, at this moment, I don't have much interest in actually trapping. I did discover that trapping does allow you to harvest animals that you can't hunt with a bow or gun.

The bottomline: Get busy on developing your self reliance skills.
