Personal Safety and Self Defense Skills: Protect Yourself While Traveling

I used to travel on business extensively-- 2-3 flights per week at times (Believe me the glamor fades fast). I always had my safety and security of my belongings in the back of my mind-- whether on a plane, in a taxi, in a hotel room, or on the street of a strange city. Having lived and worked in New York City for so many years it became second nature. Here is what I did (and still do):
- I always knew where the exits were and the procedures for getting out
- I familiarize myself with my surroundings by reading maps
- I keep a low profile and hid my valuables on me or in my room
- I am not conspicuous in dress and with money
- I have basic ideas on defending myself
That last one has come up in conversations with colleagues . . .
I flew from New York to southern California exactly one month to the day after 9/11. People asked me why I was comfortable with that and I responded it is safer to fly now than it was a month ago (heightened security). They asked me what I would do if terrorists tried to take over the plane-- I said I would defend myself with available weapons that would get past security:
- My belt
- Pens and pencils
- A rolled up magazine
- My keys between my fingers
- My body and mind
I think you get the picture . . .
When traveling in your vehicle (like I do now):
- Keep things (valuables) out of site
- Avoid stopping in remote locations
- Keep the car locked at all times
- Have emergency gear in the car
What do you do to protect yourself?
