Food Handling Tips: How to Determine if Fish is Fresh

Whether you catch the fish and store it or you buying it from the market, when it comes to determining if fish is fresh, there are a few things to look for:
- Smell-- Fresh fish usually doesn't have a pungent odor
- Look-- Fresh fish doesn't look slimey, nor does it look hard or coated. Additionally, the color should appear vibrant and eyes should look clear
- Feel-- Fresh fish should feel firm, but not soft-- it should feel solid
These are a few simple tips to help you have fresher fish. The surest way to assure fresh fish is to catch the fish yourself and prepare and serve it within 24-48 hours.
