Personal Safety and Self Defense Skills: How to Throw a Punch

There are times that you can walk away from a confrontation. There are times you can talk you way out of a confrontation. However, sometimes you may need to throw a punch.
Throwing a punch comes down to a few simple steps:
- Make a tight fist with your thumb behind your knuckles, not wrapped in your fingers
- Maintain full and complete eye contact with the target area
- Think about a fast speed of delivery
- Think about force of delivery-- Step forward and put your whole body into it, not just your arm
- Follow through-- Punch through the target
- Reload (Mentally and physically) and be ready for more
That's it!
Now, a few caveats:
- Avoid the confrontation at all costs
- Be sure you can justify your actions in court
- If possible, avoid a punch with your hand opting instead for your elbow or forearm
- Even better than an elbow or forearm, is your knee or slamming your aggressor into a hard object or surface
You may wonder why I say avoid a punch with your hand. Punching with the hand usually results in damage to the hand (a sprain or a break) if you don't hit a soft target like the throat or stomach.
Personally, I prefer to "bull-doze" an aggressor into a hard object or surface with a great deal of force. This works well when you weigh about the same as the aggressor or outweigh him. Additionally, you can claim that all you did was push him away from you as opposed to outright punching him.
A "body check" is nice too, if you can gather enough force to send him flying back several feet and then follow up with "bull dozing" him into something (Think about a football linebacker body hitting the ball carrier as opposed to tackling him). If you "pushed" him hard enough into an object or a wall-- he will feel the injuries hours later for days to come . . .
