Safety and Security Tips: 25 Ideas on Where to Hide Money in Your Car

Self reliant people do travel and should protect themselves and their property on the road.
I have thought about where I could hide money and valuables in my car . . .

Some of these are casual hiding places (running into a store or a restaurant) and some or more involved (long-term, emergency hiding). You also need to think about who has access to your car in some cases, such as gas station attendants, mechanics, and car wash personnel.

I am a big fan of duct tape and velcro (make sure the surface to be taped is sparkling clean-- rubbing alcohol helps). If you are handy-- fake panels can be fashioned. Here are some ideas:

  • Out of sight in glove compartment or trunk
  • In the sun visor
  • In the ashtrays
  • Underneath the ashtray
  • In a book
  • In the ceiling material (I would access through the ceiling light cover)
  • Taped or velcroed under the headrests
  • In CD cases
  • In clothing in the car
  • In or under the cupholders
  • Behind the gas cap or cap door
  • In the console
  • Taped or velcroed under the floormats
  • Taped to the inside of panel doors or covers
  • Velcroed under seats or dashboard
  • Inside a pen in the car
  • Taped under hood or trunk
  • Between the splits in the rear seats
  • In a watertight tube suspended by a string in the washer fluid bottle (My most clever idea?)
  • Taped to the battery
  • Taped to an inside panel under the hood
  • Taped behind the license plates (Good spot for a spare key?)
  • Inside the jack kit
  • Under the spare tire
  • Create an "original looking" panel or box that installs (bolted or welded) under the hood near engine

I like the washer idea, I'll try that on my motorbike with the fuel tank. Nobody would think about checking there!
