Disaster Strikes: Ways to Start a Fire





Disaster has struck and your world is temporarily turned upside down-- you now need alternative ways to do things. Do you know ways to start a fire without matches or a lighter? Here are just a few ideas:

 

  • Solar
    • Magnifying glass 
    • Eyeglasses
    • Binoculars, scopes, or camera lens
    • Molded ice-- Make a lens in your hands
    • Chocolate polished soda can bottom to reflect and concentrate sunlight
    • Reflector of broken flashlight or car headlight

 

  • Friction
    • Hand drill-- Stick spun between the hands on flat wood plank
    • Bow-- Stick spin powered by bow made with string or shoe laces on flat wood plank
    • Plough-- Stick rubbed back and forth on a flat wood plank with a groove in it

 

  • Electricity
    • 9 volt battery and steel wool
    • Broken flashlight bulb
    • Car or other vehicle battery


You will need some sort of tinder or accelerant-- here are some ideas:

  • Dried grass or moss
  • Dried bark
  • Pine needles
  • Cattails
  • Wood shavings
  • Twigs
  • Paper
  • Twine or rope fibers
  • Cloth fibers
  • Gas or fuel
  • Cotton balls with petroleum jelly
  • High proof alcohol
