How to Do Anything . . .

Sounds pretty broad I know,
but self reliant people need to learn to do many things . . .

So how do you learn to do anything?

  • Do your homework-- learn the basics, background, and fundamentals
  • Boil the task down to the basics and start there
  • Create a plan or process-- step-by-step instructions are even better
  • Don't rush and stay focused
  • Remember that trial and error is a cruel, but effective teacher
  • Review the steps and confirm that you followed them
  • Test it, and then test it again
  • Use it regularly, until something better comes along
  • Realize that next time you will do it better (Practice makes better)

One caveat, I can promise that you will achieve expert status, but you will have the basic abilities. For example, we can all learn to play golf, but none of us will ever play at Tiger Woods' level . . . well, maybe that's a bad example-- I couldn't resist.

Here is another tip that applies to learning (and improving upon) many things (cooking, gardening, and certain auto repairs come to mind):

  • Use scientific method

Scientific Method is simply running side-by-sides-- test group and control group. The test group is run with ONE change and watched for results (Only test one change at a time so you know exactly what caused the result). The control group is run with no change and operates as the baseline result. When the test group's result is better or more favorable than the control group's, then the test group becomes the new control group.

Using these methods, you will be well on you way to learning how to do anything.
