Good Old Fashioned, Alternative Medicine . . .

I don't profess to know much about formal, new age alternative medicine,
but there are some old fashioned, home remedies that can't hurt and seem to help:

  • Chicken soup
  • Apple a day
  • Citrus
  • Tea with fresh honey

First, let's talk chicken soup-- millions of Jewish grandmothers can't be wrong . . . chicken soup is good for you. Hot soup is a comfort food that packs plenty of nutrients whether you are sick or not.

Apples are a great snack. They are highly portable and quite refreshing. As for keeping doctors away, eating apples is a better approach then a garlic necklace . . .

Citrus packs a vitamin C punch when you have a cold and should improve your general health when you are in the pink. Even if citrus does nothing for colds, you can't really go wrong here.

My grandmothers weren't Jewish, but they believed colds were helped by hot tea with a teaspoon of fresh honey in it. If nothing else, the steam helps open the sinuses.

Perhaps some of the old time remedies are more psychological and "sugar pill" placebos, but perhaps not . . .

I always say, "Stack the deck in your favor . . ." So, wash down that aspirin with chicken soup or tea with honey.

Good health really rests on the basics-- basic common sense and basic good nutrition.
