Emergency Preparedness: 15 Items That Should Be in Your Vehicle

Here at the Self Reliance Workshop, emergency preparedness is a guiding principle. That includes at home and while traveling.
When out and about in your vehicle you should always have 15 essential items (especially with winter weather coming):
- Your valid driver's license
- A valid registration
- Proper, in-force auto insurance
- Tow or AAA phone numbers
- A working and reliable spare tire
- A complete jack kit
- Maps of the area (GPS is not infallible)
- A small, empty gas can (1-2 gal.)
- A $5 bill and some change (for the gas to get to the nearest gas station or a pay phone call)
- A cellular phone
- Owner's manual
- Sunglasses (even cheap ones will do)
- A Flashlight
- Pen and Paper
- Jumper Cables
You could/should also add some tools, a blanket, flares, first aid kit or safety kit, etc.
If you can think of anything else-- I would love to hear your comments.
The bottom line is . . . Be Prepared!

I always try to keep some bottled water and some sort of non perishable food along as well. You never know when you will be stuck or stranded for a period of time.
One other thought as well. I like to keep a roll of toilet paper in some sort of dry container ie: ziploc baggie or such.
