DDFD's Views on the Self Reliance Workshop and What's to Come . . .

Welcome to the Self Reliance Workshop . . .

I thought for my first post I would share some of my views on self reliance and provide you with an idea of what you can expect from me on this site.

My general view of self reliance is we all need to embrace the concept to some extent these days.  The only person who will look out for you and yours is you.

People have lost touch with what really matters in their lives and the recent economic problems have served as a wake up call for many.  Nowadays there is a renewed interest in self reliance and self sufficiency.  These days people are starting to reevaluate their lives.  They are starting to inquire about basic skills like:

  • DIY projects and improvements
  • Vegetable gardening
  • Homecooked meals
  • Home and auto maintenance
  • Emergency preparedness
  • Energy management
  • Income diversification and alternate sources
  • Recycling, repurposing, reusing what used to be trash

Our grandparents and great grandparents had a leg up on us when it comes to these basic skills.  I will cover these basic skills topics regularly, but I will also consider the "why's" of this new interest in self reliance and self sufficiency.

I think I can safely state that the main cause of this new interest is financial.  The economy has forced people to explore self reliance under the banner of "New Frugality".  However, there are other reasons to become more self reliant that I will cover in my posts; they include the desire to:

  • Control over your own destiny
  • Avoiding helplessness in different situations
  • Feeling the personal satisfaction of DIY
  • Getting the job done right as opposed to the half-assed approach
  • Knowing exactly what you are eating and eating better
  • Standing on your own two feet
  • Accepting that you need to look out for yourself

I think you would have to agree that when you take time to consider it, there really are many reasons to be more self reliant beyond just saving money. I applaud this improved fiscal behavior-- we all need to work at being more self reliant individuals.
